Van Dyke Brown Prints-All animals are equal are some of my oldest Vandyke Brown prints. They were printed as part of my 3rd year final exhibition. These large-scale Vandyke Brown prints were a response to the satirical allegorical novel Animal farm written by George Orwell. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon. I used this theme to unpack the socio-political climate of South Africa. I was particularly interested in trying to understand the impact that South Africa’s socio-political climate had on the high levels of violence towards woman and children. This series attempted to draw parallels between the characters in George Orwell’s novel within a South African climate.
