Description
All magic comes with a price- Rumpelstiltskin 2018 is a large etching and embossing which responds to the German fairy tale of Rumpelstiltskin with a South African Twist. The work attempts to visualise the vulnerability of the subconscious mind in an underwater dreamlike state. The work encompasses themes of parasitical attachment and vulnerability. Within the composition, the female figure “the princess” can be found at the bottom of a vast white empty landscape. The stark white paper symbolises an empty psychological void. Within the barren landscape however, a hidden monster can be found, slowly creeping towards the figure. The conglomeration of tentacles symbolises another parasitical relationship that being the king as well as Rumpelstiltskin reaching to latch on to the female form. This is further echoed on the back of the female form whereby a parasite has attached itself to the spine leaving it exposed and vulnerable. The figures face is hidden behind her own hand that appears to be strangling her. Within the figure different symbols for parasitical relationships can be seen; ticks, ants, bees and flies can be found scattered over the figure of the female form.
